Delay the Disease - Parkinson's Program
Research suggests that intense exercise results in neuroprotection & thereby slows, stops, or reverses the progression of Parkinson’s disease symptoms. Coordination of movement, flexibility, strength, cardio respiratory fitness and balance is the focus.
Free for anyone diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and will be held every Tuesday from 12-1pm at our Mitchell Healthy Living Center in Spruce Pine. Program begins October 6th. Contact Erin Spear for more information.
Walk With Ease
Arthritis Foundation Evidence-Based Program for anyone with any form of Arthritis, who wants to be more active and can stand for 10 minutes or longer. Lead by trained instructor(s) who are certified by the Arthritis Foundation.
Free to Mitchell County residents. Program begins October 6th and will be held Tuesday from 2-3pm at Riverside Park in Spruce Pine. Contact Erin Spear for more information.
For the past two years the YMCA has been working with the local Mitchell Wellness Initiative group with the goal of bringing a YMCA and healthy living programs to Mitchell County. In late 2018 the YMCA surveyed the people of Michell County to identify the facility and program needs. More then 1,300 people responded. You can download the results HERE.
Y staff have also worked with Mitchell County Schools to submit a 21st Century Community Learning Center after school and summer program to Mitchell County. Although the proposal wasn't funded, we are committed to keep trying to meet the needs of school-age children in Mitchell County and their parents.
Health living and evidence-based health interventions programs were suspended due to the pandemic. Look for them to resume on a limited basis soon. Check back with the website news.
